Kia Forte: Power Train / Drive Belt

Kia Forte 2019-2024 (BD) Service Manual / Maintenance / Power Train / Drive Belt

Repair procedures
Inspection
1.

Check belt for maintenance and abnormal wear of V-ribbed part. Replace if necessary.

Do not bend, twist or turn the drive belt inside out.

Do not allow the drive belt to come into contact with oil, water and steam.

2.

Visually check the belt for excessive wear, frayed cords etc.

If any defect has been found, replace the drive belt.

Cracks on the rib side of a belt are considered acceptable. If the belt has chunks missing from the ribs, it should be replaced.

Removal and Installation

[Gamma 1.6 MPI]

1.

Disconnect the battery negative terminal.

2.

Loosen the alternator mounting bolts (A) and then turn the adjusting bolt (B) counterclockwise to loose the drive belt tension.

Tightening torque

M8 bolt :

19.6 - 26.5 N·m (2.0 - 2.7 kgf·m, 14.5 - 19.5 Ib·ft)

M10 bolt :

29.4 - 41.2 N·m (3.0 - 4.2 kgf·m, 21.7 - 30.4 Ib·ft)

3.

Remove the drive belt (A).

4.

Install in the reverse order of removal.

[NU 2.0 MPI]

1.

Remove the engine room under cover.

(Refer to Engine and Transaxle Assembly - "Engine Room Under Cover")

2.

Using the wrench, turning the auto tensioner pulley (A) counterclockwise and then remove the drive belt (B).

3.

Install in the reverse order of removal.

[Gamma 1.6 T-GDI]

1.

Loosen the alternator mounting bolts (A).

2.

Loosen the drive belt tension by loosening the adjusting bolt (B).

Tightening torque :

12mm (0.47in) bolt :

26.5 - 37.3 N·m (2.7 - 3.8 kgf·m, 19.5 - 27.5 lb·ft) [10T Type]

24.3 - 26.9 N·m (2.48 - 2.74 kgf·m, 17.9 - 19.8 lb·ft) [8T Type]

14mm (0.55in) bolt :

29.4 - 41.2 N·m (3.0 - 4.2 kgf·m, 21.7 - 30.4 Ib·ft)

3.

Install in the reverse order of removal.

[New U 1.6 TCI]

1.

Remove the engine room under cover.

(Refer to Engine and Transaxle Assembly - “Engine Room Under Cover”)

2.

To release the tensioner, rotate the tensioner arm by turning the tensioner arm boss (A) clockwise using a wrench.

3.

Remove the drive belt (A).

4.

Install in the reverse order of removal

Install the drive belt in the following order : Drive belt auto tensioner pulley → Alternator pulley → Crankshaft damper pulley → idler → A/C compressor pulley. Rotate the auto tensioner arm by turning the auto tensioner arm boss (A) counterclockwise using a wrench. After installing the drive belt to the auto tensioner pulley, slowly release the auto tensioner arm.

Adjustment
[Gamma 1.6 MPI/T-GDI]

Drive belt tension measurement and adjustment

Belt tension measurement

Measure the belt tension using a mechanical tension gauge or a sonic tension meter.

Tension

New belt :

980.7 - 1078.7 N (100.0 - 110.0 kgf, 220.5 - 242.5 lbf)

Used belt :

706.1 - 804.1 N (72.0 - 82.0 kgf, 158.7 - 180.8 lbf)

If the engine has run for 5 minutes or more, the belt tension must be adjusted as a used belt.

When installing the V-ribbed belt, all grooves on the pulley should be covered with belt ribs.

A loose belt causes slip noise.

Too tight belt cause bearing of alternator and water pump to damage.

Using a mechanical tension gauge (BT-33-73F, BTG-2 type)
1.

While pressing the handle (A) of the gauge, insert the belt (B) between pulley and pulley (or idler) into the gap between spindle (C) and hook (D).

2.

After releasing the handle (A), read a value on the dial pointed by the indicator (B).

Using a sonic tension meter (U-505/507 type)
1.

Input the belt specifications into the tension meter.
