Description and operation
Desrcription

Installed on the turbocharger, the Electric WGT Control Actuator operates the valve in the Waste Gate Turbocharger (WGT) and regulates the amount of compressed air by using the ECM's PWM signal. This actuator consists of a DC motor which actuates the valve, a 2-step gear which increases torque of the DC motor, a position sensor which detects status of the valve, and an electric control unit which drives the DC motor.

Repair procedures
Removal & Installation
1.

Turn the ignition switch OFF and disconnect the battery negative (-) terminal.

2.

Remove the air cleaner assembly.

(Refer to Engine Mechanical System - "Air Cleaner")

3.

Disconnect the EWGA extension connector (A).

4.

Remove the intake pipe stay (A).

Tightening torque :

M8 Bolt : 18.6 - 23.5 N·m (1.9 - 2.4kgf·m, 13.7 - 17.4 lb·ft)

M10 Bolt : 29.4 - 34.3 N·m (3.0 - 3.5kgf·m, 21.6 - 25.3 lb·ft)

5.

Remove the intake pipe (A).

Tightening torque :

Bolt : 29.4 - 39.2N·m (3.0 - 4.0 kgf·m, 21.6 - 28.9 lb·ft)

Nut : 35.3 - 41.1 N·m (3.6 - 4.2 kgf·m, 26.0 - 30.3 lb·ft)

6.

Remove the heat protector (A) after loosening the mounting bolts.

Heat protector mounting bolt :

9.8 - 11.8N·m (1.0 - 1.2 kgf·m, 7.2 - 8.7 lb·ft)

7.

Remove the turbo charger water pipe & hose (A).

Tightening torque :

Flange Bolt : 9.8 - 11.8N·m (1.0 - 1.2 kgf·m, 7.2 - 8.7 lb·ft)

Eye Bolt : 26.4 - 32.3 N·m (2.7 - 3.3 kgf·m, 19.5 - 32.3 lb·ft)

8.

Disconnect the shaft link (A) by removing the C-ring (B).

9.

Remove the electric waste gate actuator by loosening the bolts (C).

10.

Installation is the reverse order of removal.

Adjustment

[Rod Adjustment Procedure Flowchart]

1.

Check that the waste gate turbo charger is cool enough to work.

It can help cooling down fast to use a electric fan.

The cooling part (A) and the wind direction (B) are as follows.

2.

Turn the ignition switch to OFF position.

3.

Connect the diagnostic tool to DLC connector (16 pin) under the driver side instrument panel.

4.

Turn the ignition switch ON position.

Do not start the engine.

5.

Select VIN or Vehicle on the initial screen.

6.

Enter "Engine Control" menu after slelecting vehicle information (Vehicle model, Model year, Engine type) or entering the VIN number.

7.

Access to KDS Engine > Current Data

8.

Without starting the engine, cycle the ignition ON for 5seconds then ignition OFF for 5seconds then check the "Adaption value for the low mechanical stop of EWGA" on the KDS.

Repeat this step until the amount of the adaption value change compared to previous cycle is below 0.05V.

Do not start the engine. This is a crucial step to read the correct adaption value.

9.

Check that " Adaption value for the lower mechancal stop of EWGA" is within the specified voltage value.

Voltage : 3.5 - 3.7 V

10.

If the voltage value measured is not within the specified voltage value, adjust the EWGA rod length. But, if no, no further procedure is required.

(1)

Loosen the rod end lock nut (A) and remove the C-ring (B).

(2)

Adjust the rod end part (C) by rotating it clockwise (D) or counterclockwise (E) to satisfy the specification.

For example, if the coolant temperature is below 25 °C adjusted as follows.

Adaption value for the lower mechancal stop of EWGA (V)
Adjustment direction of rod end
Rod length variation (After adjustment)
> 3.7
counterclockwise
Longer
< 3.5
clockwise
Shorter

Turning angle
Changing level of the adaption value (V)
0.5 turn (180°)
About 0.1
1 turn (360°)
About 0.2

11.

Install the rod end (B) to the turbo charger lever (A) temporarily. Don't tighten the rod end lock nut (C) and C-ring (D).

12.

Check " Adaption value for the lower mechancal stop of EWGA" after selecting "Current Data" menu.

Turn the ignition switch ON/OFF repeatedly until the changing value of " Adaption value for the lower mechancal stop of EWGA" is within 0.05V.

Turn the ignition switch ON/OFF. But hold 5 seconds at each IG ON or OFF state.

13.

If the voltage value measured is not within the specified voltage value, repeat 9-12 procedures untill the voltage value is within the specified voltage value.

14.

Check that " Adaption value for the lower mechancal stop of EWGA" is within the specified voltage value.

15.

If it is within the specified voltage value, install the rod end to the turbo charger lever.

(1)

Install the rod end (B) to the turbo charger lever (A).

(2)

Tighten the rod end lock nut (C).

(3)

Install the C-ring (E).

Be careful not to remove the washer (D).
